GROW is a multidisciplinary group of students with a shared interest in global health and community outreach. Through GROW, first and second year rehab medicine students, including one Yakima native, have been given the opportunity to travel to rural Cusco, Peru this September to volunteer at Camino Nuevo School. Camino Nuevo School is a school that serves ~75 children ages 3-25 years who are directly affected by an intellectual disability, such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. It was founded by Manos Unidas International in 2009, with their focus being to improve these children’s quality of life by providing them with physical and occupational therapy to help prepare them to participate in regular education and vocational settings. The rehab medicine students also plan to conduct home visits in surrounding villages for individuals who can't transport themselves to the school.
