COVID-19 Update: Bale Breaker Brewing Company’s taproom is temporarily closed to the public, but we are running weekly 12-5pm Saturday Drive-Thrus. Visit our blog for this week’s menu.
Here at Bale Breaker, we always say that hops are in our DNA. What is equally true but often goes unsaid is that the Yakima Valley is the heart and soul of our brewery. Our business has expanded over the years, but our very core remains in the rolling hills and hop fields of the Yakima Valley. Since opening in 2013, Yakima has shown up time and time again to support us, always first in line for our new releases and by our side when times are tough. We wouldn’t be who we are without this valley and the people within it.
It’s been devastating to see our industry gutted by the COVID-19 crisis. Even as the curve continues to flatten in the Pacific Northwest, many of our friends and customers have had to close their doors or reduce their staff, putting millions out of work and threatening the industry that we are so proud to be a part of. Although we aren’t pouring beers in our taproom and are seeing a significant hit to sales with the closure of bars, restaurants, and stadiums, we are lucky to be moving beer through grocery stores, bottleshops, and at our weekly drive-thru events at the brewery. While that, thankfully, has kept our team and business intact, our industry as a whole is hurting, and it was time to do something.
A few weeks ago, the owner of Reuben’s Brews in Seattle reached out to us about brewing a beer as part of their “You Are Not Alone” program, and it was a no brainer – of course we were on board. Reuben’s is generously donating 100% of the profit of their (extremely delicious) beer to Big Table, a non-profit supporting those in our industry who have lost their jobs. We knew we wanted to be involved but, after doing some research, we realized no such fund existed in Yakima. So we reached out to our friends at I Heart Yakima with the idea to set something up in our community, and they jumped in immediately and enthusiastically to pull this together.
Today, Bale Breaker and I Heart Yakima are proud to announce “We Are Yakima”, a referral-based fundraiser on a mission to alleviate the financial burden of those in the food and beverage industry in the Yakima Valley who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. We invite anyone in the community to donate your “going out money” in exchange for all the feels or refer a coworker, employee, or friend who has lost their job or significant hours within the food and beverage industry. “We Are Yakima” will be funded by donations from individuals, local businesses, and 100% of the profits of our own version of You Are Not Alone Hazy IPA, which will be released at our drive-thru on Saturday, May 9. Although donations to We Are Yakima are not tax-deductible, they do spread joy and are a helping hand in our community.
We assumed other partners in the Yakima Valley would be excited to join in, so we were thrilled, yet not surprised, when our good friends at Gilbert Cellars jumped in with their own “We Are Yakima” Unoaked Chardonnay Release. In General Manager Gloria Gilbert’s words: “The Gilbert Family has been in Yakima for over 120 years. A legacy like this only comes with the unwavering support of our local community. Through thick and thin, Yakima has been here for Gilbert Cellars since 2004. Now, we are eager to repay that support through this partnership with I Heart Yakima and Bale Breaker Brewing Company.” Our friends at Tieton Cider jumped in eagerly as well - profits from their "We Are Yakima" Lavender Honey Cider Bundle will also go directly to the fund.
It's time to do what we can to help, while also doing our part to flatten the curve and keep our community safe. The funds received through donations and sales of our You Are Not Alone Hazy IPA, Gilbert Cellars’ We Are Yakima Unoaked Chardonnay, and Tieton Cider's We Are Yakima Honey Cider Bundle will be distributed to our community as gift cards to locally-owned grocery stores.
