Bale Breaker's Hazy L IPA Wins Silver at 2020's Great American Brewing Festival

Bale Breaker's Hazy L IPA Wins Silver at 2020's Great American Brewing Festival

Bale Breaker Brewing Company is thrilled to announce their Great American Brewing Festival win for Hazy L IPA, taking home the silver in the Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale category.

As with everything in 2020, GABF looked a little different this year. Normally, a group of our team heads to Denver, CO for the world’s most prestigious beer competition and a few blissful days and nights surrounded by tens of thousands of fellow brewers and craft beer nerds. This year, we had to settle for joining in from home for GABF’s first-ever virtual ceremony in 34 years.  With nearly 9,000 entries from 1,720 breweries from all 50 states, we were beyond thrilled and honored when our Hazy L IPA was awarded a silver medal for Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale.  As one of our team members said, “In the beer industry, this is like winning an Olympic medal.”

It’s remarkable to us to be in such amazing company at GABF – and to see Washington and the Pacific Northwest sweep so many awards was just the icing on the cake. It’s truly a testament to the collaboration and innovation that comes from this area, and we’re honored to be surrounded by so many amazing breweries (shout out to our neighbors at Bron Yr Aur Brewing Co. for their bronze for Thriller Pillar Porter!).

It feels especially poetic that Hazy L IPA was our winning entry – the labor of love that led to this beer represents exactly what we strive to be as a brewery. We launched our 12oz Hazy L cans in January 2020 after a full year of refining the recipe with over 30 hazy variations. We brewed so many hazies that we actually ended up launching a second canned hazy line, our Clarity Rarity series, later in 2020 to showcase our love for experimental hazy IPAs. But Hazy L was the one we settled on for our year-round lineup, because it showcased our homegrown hops, with an approachable bitterness and a crisp body that made it the perfect hazy for everyday drinking.

Hazy L really does showcase what we’re all about as a brewery – we take our time with our beers, because quality is the most important factor that goes into every glass. We may have been a little late to the hazy game, but we did it our way, and winning a silver at GABF feels like a nod to that deliberate, careful planning and focus on quality and taste above all else. Like every beer we put out, the number one question we ask ourselves is: would our team drink that? And boy, with Hazy L, the answer has always been a resounding yes.  Like all our beers, Hazy L’s name is also a call back to our family hop farm and the greats that came before us – named for our great-grandparents’ cattle brand “Lazy L”, this beer and win is a nod to our family’s legacy and the importance of quality that they instilled in us from such a young age.

Celebrate this win by picking up a 6-pack of Hazy L IPA and letting it take you to the Fabled Fields of Haze. Find Hazy L near your zipcode by using our beer finder. WA customers can also get a case shipped directly to their doors, and you can grab it fresh from the source at our curbside pickup hours, Thurs/Fri 3-6pm and Saturday 12-5pm with a 20% discount this weekend only (10/22-25/20).

Grab a Hazy L and join us in a cheers to our team, who worked diligently to create Hazy L and continues to kick ass at brewing, packaging, selling, and drinking this delicious hazy IPA.
